After the last documentary about the terrible «narco-war» that has been hitting Mexico for 10 years and that generated one of the most intense and enriching debates we’ve had, we return to Mexico, to talk now about the exiled republic. Those of you who have followed us know that this is a topic we have always paid special attention to. Mexico was one of the countries that welcomed more Spanish exiles. The republican deputies who set up the institutions of exile and other cultural and academic institutions of great prestige settle there. It was one of the few countries that recognized the Government of the Republic as the only legitimate one of the Spanish State and it remained so until 1977, two years after the dictator’s death. We Democrats owe it a debt that we have never sufficiently acknowledged. Journalist and filmmaker Anabel Campo Vidal approaches this subject from an unusual perspective that we found interesting: the emotional consequences of exile. Amor, desamor y exilio rescues the sentimental side of young people who managed to save their lives by submitting to an unforeseen fate and paying a high price: the break with their country of origin, but above all with their loved ones . Ruptures that the director herself tries to restore by facilitating the reunion of the families. Through the memories of the children of those young republicans, the documentary rescues four stories, one of which gave rise to Manuel Rivas’s novel El lápiz del carpenter, brought to the cinema by Anton Reixa. Broken loves, recovered loves, new couples born leaving the loved one behind; four lives of men and women, who escaped to America to reinvent themselves.
To present the film, which was premiered throughout the state, we had, as always, the director, who after the screening held a discussion with the audience.
