It tells the journey of a father and his son from the south of France to Mecca. Both belong to a culture in which communication between the two is difficult but not impossible. The gulf between them (generational, cultural and linguistic) is greater because of their status as exiles in France. During this journey they will understand what separates them but also what unites them.
